I have a 2010 Rav4. My four year old son wedged a nickel in the bottom ‘spoke’ of the steering wheel. Before I could do anything to remove the nickel it got behind the wheel, out of sight. I turned the wheel lock to lock many times to see if the coin would fall out or if I could hear it moving around-neither happened. The horn works normally, does not go off at times when I am turning. That leads me to believe that the coin is not in a spot finishing the circuit for the horn. My concern is that if I am ever involved in a crash the airbag will deploy and the coin will wedge in my forehead or go through it.
The above being said, is it possible for the coin to have gotten in front of the airbag? Pictures and parts diagrams I have seen make me think the coin could not be there, but rather in the back part of the wheel-closest to the column. Any input on this would be appreciated. I really don’t want to have to take the steering wheel apart.
