Horizen was founded by Robert Viglione and Rolf Versluis.
Robert Viglione is co-founder and CEO of Horizen Labs and co-founder and president of the Zen Blockchain Foundation. He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of South Carolina and worked as an Operations Research Analyst at Lanmark Technology. He has also worked as a senior analyst at Tecolote Research and as a project manager for the US Air Force.
Rolf Versluis is the co-founder and executive advisor of the Zen Blockchain Foundation. He is an experienced businessman in the IT industry and owns a medium-sized mining enterprise. In the past, Rolf worked for Cisco Systems, in the semiconductor industry, and was also a nuclear weapons trained officer in the US submarine fleet.
Jane Lippencott was a member of the founding team and co-author of the project’s original white paper. She is now a partner at Winklevoss Capital. She is also a member of 2021 VC Cohort at All Rise and is a consultant at Teller Finance. Jane is also a mentor for the Open Web Collective, Celo, and Katapult Accelerator. She is a contributor to Nakamoto.com. She has served as a mentor at Blockchain for Social Impact Coalition (BSIC), at dLab and at Ethereum Classic Labs, as an advisor at Unbounded Capital, as a mentor at Techstars, and as a board member of Cord.

Horizen has a large network with a tiered node system. Operators receive 20% of the total subsidy per block, and the distributed node network provides a large infrastructure for running the ecosystem of both applications and sidechains. As for ZEN mining, this cryptocurrency uses ASIC mining and the Equihash algorithm. 60% of the block reward goes to the miners, 20% to the company fund and 20% to the nodes.
ZEN uses the Equihash consensus algorithm. Thus, Horizen supports ASIC mining.
ZEN uses secure nodes, which are critical to securing the Horizen network. Secure nodes have a unique purpose and are TLS encrypted, which ensures secure communication between nodes.
Horizen is also a fork of Zcash and, as such, inherits Zcash’s privacy technology and uses shielded transactions that are capable of masking the sender, recipient, and transaction. Zk-SNARKs are the core of these transactions and are being developed by the Zcash team as a form of zero-knowledge cryptography.

Funding
The division of each Horizen PoW block reward and transaction fees are distributed using the following rules: 60% to miners, 20% to the treasury, 10% to secure node operators, and 10% to super node operators.

Dr. Rob Viglione is the co-founder and CEO of Horizen Labs and the co-founder and team lead of the Zen Blockchain Foundation. Additionally, Rob has been an advisor to blockchain projects globally, including Aave, and he previously worked as a scientist in the space industry.
