Best Mobile Game of 2019: What the Golf?
What The Golf is officially described as “the golf game for people who hate golf,” and it couldn’t be more apt. This isn’t your typical golf game — one that just ramps up difficulty in distance, angles, and obstacles between golfer and hole — and you catch onto that fairly quickly when you’re swinging your club and it’s the club that goes flying towards the hole. Or when you’re knocking cats towards goals over golf balls. Circumventing the gravitational pull of planets or dodging angry cars as they drive into you are also real levels in this game.LoadingPlayAside from its goofy evolution of difficulty, and even golfing terms, an endless stream of clever game references embedded into its design makes What The Golf feel like a golf game for gamers, complete with levels inspired by Superhot or even Flappy Bird. It’s creative, silly, and consistently fun and engaging throughout.

Grindstone
Grindstone takes the trappings of a match-3 puzzle game and turns it into a winding series of brutal slashes through creepy crawlies that become precious gems, and other materials. Its simple loop is made so special by the way Grindstone is built to let you chain some ridiculously long series of enemies, as well as its upgrade system, which includes new weapons and armor that add to the strategy of each floor. Backed by an impressive soundtrack, Capy Games’ Grindstone is not only one of Apple Arcade’s best games yet but one of the best mobile games this year.
LoadingPlaySayonara Wild Hearts
From the moment Clair de lune plays, the whimsical feels familiar. This opening level (and song) sets the tone for Sayonara: Wild Hearts and it builds on that base over 23 superb levels. Like other rhythm games, you’re trying to get the highest score possible; here, that means moving left and right to collect hearts and dodge close calls. But unlike other rhythm games, it’s rarely a grueling feat, you can skip hard levels, there’s barely a penalty for failing, and your skill has almost no effect on the music.LoadingPlayInstead, Sayonara: Wild Hearts is a magical invitation to move through space, appreciate the bold visual style, and bond with a pop synth soundtrack that’s so fantastic it’s easily one of my favorite albums of 2019. Environments are constantly changing from San Francisco-esque cityscapes and sprawling forests to virtual reality and oceans set in space. All of this culminates to one of the most unique and immersive video game experiences out there.

Call of Duty Mobile shouldn’t work. I mean, seriously? A first-person shooter on a touch screen. And yet, it’s absolutely fantastic. With multiple control options (and now even controller support), the game feels slick and doesn’t come off as some low-effort spin-off. The game also features tons of multiplayer modes that rotate often, a bevvy of classic maps, and even a full Battle Royale mode. As if that wasn’t enough, they even just added in a Zombie mode, proving that a steady flow of updates is something we can expect to see from this title.

In addition to being a spectacular puzzle game in its own right, Manifold Garden offers one of the most artistically unique experiences on mobile devices. Its spatial puzzles and Escherian world offer plenty of creative fun to be had over the course of its 6-10 hours, and will remain in our minds as one of the most intricate and intriguing puzzle games on the platform for years to come.

People’s Choice: Call of Duty Mobile
According to our readers, Call of Duty Mobile was the best mobile game of 2019, beating out the competition with 42% of the vote in our People’s Choice polling. From our review:
Call of Duty: Mobile represents the best the juggernaut franchise has ever been on a handheld platform. The leveling path is rewarding, even without spending money, and there are lots of modes to jump around between, including an impressive battle royale mode. Unfortunately, it is still a shooter controlled by a touch-screen with no bluetooth controller support – even though I was impressed, the accuracy and usability will still never be as good as its console and PC counterparts. While great games have always been on mobile, Apple Arcade did wonders for increasing the visibility of mobile games while giving us easy access to a curated collection of some of the best experiences the platform had to offer.
